耶穌稱門徒為朋友，同時給予他們使命，要求他們彼此相愛。如果他們這麼做了，並不是滿全和耶穌建立友誼的基礎，而是證明他們真是耶穌的朋友。「彼此相愛」並不是基督徒爭取天主的愛的「籌碼」，而是他們得到天主的愛的「後果」。這個情形用在「揀選」的概念上也非常恰當，我們可以反向閱讀若十五16的經文：誰如果真的結出了果實，便可宣稱自己是被天主所揀選的。「彼此相愛、結出果實」不是基督徒團體「留」在天主愛內的原因，而是必然的結果。
善牧為了祂的羊把自己的性命交出，因此合一的基礎就建立在一個根本的信仰上，清楚地認知我們都因著基督的死亡而被救贖成為聖潔的。的確，根據若望福音的教導，唯有在耶穌基督的愛內，教會的合一才能建立，祂的愛就是自由，在這個自由中祂把自己的生命交付出來。基督徒必須活出這樣的愛，才能超越各種不同的教會（派）組織與結構而達成合一，使耶穌「一牧一棧」的許諾成為事實。
